A Chapter 7 bankruptcy is commonly referred to as a fresh start. What it can actually do is help you get a better nights sleep. It can help take some of the stress off you, it can help you basically just have a better day because what a Chapter 7 does, is it will eliminate your un-secure debt. If you're having a hard time managing your debt and you've got a lot of medical bills or credit cards or payday loans, if you're suffering from any of this, well, a Chapter 7 can likely help you.
A little bit about a Chapter 7, what it does is it will eliminate all of those types of debts. It will eliminate all of your un-secure debt. It makes it go away. You don't have to deal with them anymore. You don't have to deal with those creditors, they won't be calling to harass you. They better not be or else you know we'll tend to that. It stops the phone calls. There's also couple other types of debt you have to deal with in a Chapter 7. There's priority debt. Not a lot we can generally do with priority debt because it's money that you owe for back child support, back alimony, sometimes back taxes. We can't wipe those debts out. Sometimes very rarely with taxes we can wipe that out, but it's very rare.
The other type of debt is secured debt. Now secured debt is stuff that you owe for your house, for your car, maybe for your furniture. Now, if you decide in a Chapter 7 that you don't want to pay for one of your cars, let's say you've got three and you say, "I just need to keep one of those cars." Well, we can surrender those two cars, and you won't have to pay for them in a Chapter 7. A Chapter 7 is a great, great option to helping you get back on your feet financially in a very fast period of time, because you are in that Chapter 7 and out of that Chapter 7 in about 4 months. From the time that you sign to the time that you get your discharge is generally, four, maybe four and a half months. But you're in and out pretty quickly, and what that does is it helps you start rebuilding your credit, fast. When you finish that Chapter 7 we're still here for you because we want you to take a debtor financial education course. What that does is it helps you learn about high interest loans, these payday loans, are really just bad news. It also helps you learn how to rebuild your credit score in a quick period of time.
