Greenville, Alabama

Did you know that Greenville’s original name was Buttsville? Thankfully, this was changed within about three years of the town being formed. Originally settled in 1819, Buttsville was changed to Greenville in 1822 when it became the county seat of Butler County. The name of Greenville was chosen because of the settler’s found remembrance of Greenville, South Carolina which was the former home of many of the original settlers. In fact, Mr. Sellers’ family was some of the earliest settlers in Butler County, and settled just south of Greenville in the early 1830’s. Another interesting fact about Greenville is that during WWII it was home to a German satellite POW camp. The prisoners would work on the roads around the county, and older citizens of the area (including Mr. Sellers’ grandmother who is now 97 years old) said that the prisoners were very polite and gracious.

Like many of the cities in the Black Belt, Greenville has a high poverty rate. Over 25% of the population lives in poverty which includes over 30% of those under age 18. Because of the sometimes dire economic situation in the Greenville area, many people live paycheck to paycheck. However, what happens when an economic downturn happens with local families? Our Greenville bankruptcy attorneys have seen situations happen to families such as a divorce, death, medical emergency, loss of hours at work, or even worse loss of a job. When this happens, bills pile up and people don’t know where to turn. Sometimes people wait and the bills continue to rise due to late payments and high interest rates. Creditors start harassing people by calling at home and at work all during the day and night. Lenders threaten to repossess cars and foreclose on homes. Eventually, people get sued, a garnishment is issued, and a creditor starts taking 25% of a paycheck. With this type of stress, people can’t eat or sleep. Children are missing out on extracurricular activities because the families don’t have enough money for kids to play baseball, football, or even go on small field trips. At The Sellers Law Firm, we hate the mere thought of families having to suffer like this. Good, hardworking people just trying to make it, yet an unforeseen financial set back makes enjoying family life very tough! Do not live like this. We can fix these problems with a Chapter 7 or Chapter 13. Call the Greenville bankruptcy attorneys and let us help you get back on solid financial footing!
