Houston County, Alabama
Houston County is located in the furthest southeastern corner of Alabama. Houston County’s county seat is Dothan. Houston County was not created until 1903, despite the existence of a courthouse in Dothan since 1894, which makes it the youngest of all the counties located in Alabama.
Until after the Civil War, few people settled Houston County, due to the perception that the soil was poor. With the development of manufactured fertilizers, farming became more and more central in Houston County. With the destruction caused by the boll weevil, farmers began to diversify and began planting crops such as peanuts and corn and they began planting pecan orchards and raising livestock. Today, nearly one half of the world’s peanuts are grown within 100 miles of Dothan and more than one quarter of the world’s peanuts are produced in Houston County. Today, Dothan heralds itself as the “Peanut Capitol of the World”.
Even with a thriving agricultural base, industry also thrives in Houston County. Houston County is home to the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant, operated by Southern Nuclear Operating Company, and many textile and food-production factories.
Houston County had many locations and events that should be visited. Landmark Park is located just outside Dothan and is considered a living-history museum. It boasts an actual working farm and township that is authentic to the 1890s. In Landmark Park, you can tour a working town right out of history that has a working blacksmith shop, log cabins, and livestock and crops. Each year Landmark Park hosts school children from all over the state and has a number of special events seasonally, including demonstrations of the various farming, harvesting, and crafting skills that were readily available to the farmers of the 1890s.
An event in Houston County that should not be missed is the annual National Peanut Festival. The National Peanut Festival is a week-long celebration of the peanut and the role the peanut has played in the Houston County infrastructure. And the admiration of the peanut can be seen throughout the town year round, where visitors can find individually decorated peanut sculptures throughout the city of Dothan.
Dothan is also home to the Wiregrass Museum of Art, vast colorful murals throughout downtown, the Dothan Opera House, and the Mule Marker in Poplar Head Park.
