Russell County, Alabama

Russell County is located in Alabama and Phenix City is the county seat. Russell County was established in 1832 and is located in the south eastern part of the state, on the Alabama-Georgia state line. There are several cities and town that fall within Russell County, including, Fort Mitchell, Glenville, Hurtsboro, Ladonia, Phenix City, Pittsview and Seale. A portion of Phenix City is located in Russell County while the other portion falls within Lee County. Also, Phenix City has a portion of the city that falls within the Eastern Time zone due its proximity to Georgia.

It is reported that Phenix City, which his partially located in Russell County, was a hub for organized crime during the 1940's and 50's. In fact, author Margaret Ann Barnes wrote a book the documented the violence, organized crime, gambling and prostitution that were pervasive during that time. The book is called The Tragedy and the Triumph of Phenix City, Alabama. The movie, The Phenix City Story, was released in 1955 and told the story of the rampant corruption present in Phenix City during the 40's and 50's.

Hurtsboro, a town located in Russell County, is home to the local landmark the City Grill Cafe. Hurtsboro is also home to other notable historic structures, including the Joel Hurt House. This home was constructed in 1857 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Fort Mitchell, which is an unincorporated community in Russell County, is home to Fort Mitchell National Cemetery. The Fort Mitchell National Cemetery is the final resting place for approximately 5,000 individuals since its opening in 1987. The cemetery sits on 280 acres and is a United States National Cemetery, listed along with 129 other cemeteries. Fort Mitchell was originally built by the Georgia Militia during the Creek War in 1813-1814. Russell County, and the cities and town that are located within the county, are rich in history and culture. Russell County has many attractions that allow residents and visitors to experience a piece of the past and get a glimpse of the county's future.
